"Apple"Ty knows about 21 signs at this time and continues to expand my knowledge of infant/toddler sign language. While I teach the infant/toddler sign language class for work, I know enough signs for a 3 year old, but my son is expanding my sign vocabulary. He doesn't just want to "eat" anymore, Ty is specific in what he wants to eat, thus my need to learn new signs.
I am teaching a lesson on infant/toddler sign language at BabyFest which is held at a regional library in late April. In preparation, I took pictures of Ty using some of his signs to show the families on how children modify signs. This was the first time that I had ever tried this on Ty by say, "Ty, show me (fill in the blank). " I was quite impressed with my little guy. He used all of his signs out of context and gave me the perfect opportunity to take some pictures. When I teach my class, I always encourage my participants to share these signs with caregivers since the signs children make are often modified from the actual sign.

Don't you just find that these little ones are such sponges at this age!?! I am continually amazed at how much Abigail comprehends and even more amazed at how each and every new day she attempts to say new words. We taught her just a few signs (basic ones) from the moment we got her which she still uses - though I know she can actually "say" the word itself.
We are indeed basking in the JOY she brings!

AA uses signs too. We did about 10 from the day we met her (she didn't care to learn much in China) and she uses them daily. We haven't taught her any others.... maybe we should.... oh we will go find our flash cards!

You go, Ty!! I love this series. It has been interesting to see how QQ modifies the signs as well - her "more" (the first one she learned) looks like a sideways time-out, and it's very consistent, always precisely the same way. some of her signs are actually more eloquent than necessary - her "fish" is positively poetic!
QQ only just started to be interested in signing less than two weeks ago, but as soon as she got started, she went nuts. She has 13, and is picking up more every day.
